October 21: A particularly nasty attack has upended the Ohio gubernatorial race between Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton. Ramaswamy released an ad this week in which Acton's mother, a woman named Donna Arthur, called her daughter a habitual liar who should not be elected. Acton responded that her mother's boyfriend had sexually abused her and her brother and that she did nothing about it. The alleged abuse against Acton began when she was twelve years old. The Democrats released an ad featuring the brother, whose name is Phil Stearns. He confirmed Acton's account and said he was abused as well. The mother and daughter reportedly have not spoken since 1978.

October 15: Dozens of polls are being released as early voting starts and election day nears. Election day (or month) to pollsters is like the Christmas season for retailers. Pollsters have ulterior motives – they want the client to come back next cycle, after all – and the temptation is to lean one way or the other. In some cases it's a defensible tweak. In others it goes over the line. Let's just say that polling is an interesting business. The best advice is to pay attention to polls but to take them with a grain of salt.
