New Jersey voters consistently rank affordability and economic security as their most pressing concerns, with issues such as housing, healthcare, and democracy following closely behind. Important issues in New Jersey are as varied as one would expect in this state, which is a fascinating mix of urban, suburban and rural areas.

The Garden State is the focus in the latest installment of Vote This Time’s ongoing series looking at the most important electoral issues across the U.S. and the Democratic and Republican positions on those issues. The stories are written by AI. In this case, both the essay and the graphic w (this one in particular by Perplexity and edited by CW.

Taxes and Cost of Living Matter Most to New Jersey Voters

Polls show taxes and overall affordability rank are highest among the issues that matter to New Jersey voters. Those folks are most concerned with property taxes, utility costs, and prices rising faster than income as central to their vote. New Jersey’s high property taxes and everyday expenses make it difficult for many residents to remain in the state, particularly older homeowners and middle‑class families.

State Democrats emphasize targeted property‑tax relief programs, expanded credits and rebates for seniors and low‑ and middle‑income households and state investment in services such as education and transit. They argue these programs justify the tax burden.

Republicans emphasize cutting taxes, restraining state spending and reforming the state’s fiscal structure, including efforts to limit property‑tax growth, reduce regulatory costs and attract businesses to broaden the tax base.

The rest of the top five issues in New Jersey:

Jobs and the Economy

Jobs and the broader economy rank just behind taxes as a “very important” concern for more than four in five New Jersey voters. Over half say economic concerns are the top issue facing the state. Voters worry about wage growth, job security and whether the state’s economic climate encourages businesses to stay and expand.

Republicans usually stress lowering business taxes, simplifying regulations and curbing what they view as excessive government interference to make New Jersey more competitive and to stimulate private‑sector job growth.

Democrats typically support active state involvement in economic development, including infrastructure spending, incentives tied to job creation, and policies they say raise living standards such as higher minimum wages and worker protections.

Housing Affordability

Housing affordability is a growing worry. Many voters say they are more likely to back candidates who they feel will make housing more affordable across income levels. Renters and would‑be first‑time buyers face particularly high barriers. Concerns about displacement and long commutes have spread beyond traditional urban centers.

Democrats generally favor expanding affordable housing programs, supporting higher housing density near transit and using state policy to encourage or require municipalities to permit more multifamily and mixed‑income development. Republicans focus on reducing regulations and fees that they argue constrain housing supply. They resist aggressive state mandates on municipalities and emphasize local control over zoning and development decisions.

Health Care and Support for Seniors

Access to high quality and affordable health care is important to more than 90 percent of likely voters. Many older voters say they are more likely to support candidates who protect healthcare and long‑term care services for seniors and people with disabilities. Health costs, availability of providers and support for care givers factor into how residents evaluate state leaders.

Republicans are more likely to emphasize cost control, private‑sector solutions and reducing what they view as wasteful or unsustainable spending. They support maintaining care for vulnerable populations.

Democrats tend to support robust funding for Medicaid and other state health programs. They back measures to expand coverage, lower prescription costs and strengthen protections for patients and caregivers.

Threats to Democracy and Government Ethics

Polls show that “threats to democracy” and ethics in government rank behind economic concerns in the Garden State. These topics still matter to a significant share of New Jersey voters, however. There are concerns about corruption, transparency and whether elected officials are as responsive to ordinary residents as they are to special interests.

Republicans generally emphasize election integrity measures, such as stricter voter‑ID and oversight of mail‑in ballots. They criticize what they see as partisan abuses or overreach in state institutions.

Democrats typically see the issue through the prism of protecting voting rights, opposing what they perceive to be voter suppression and strengthening campaign finance and ethics rules.

Other Key Issues in New Jersey:

  • Immigration policy and border security
  • Crime and public safety
  • Public education and school quality
  • Transportation and infrastructure, including NJ Transit reliability and road conditions
  • Climate resilience and response to natural disasters, such as flooding and coastal storms.
